Batteries, Starting & Charging (using the Snap-on MicroVAT tester) covers the construction, operation, and testing of conventional, maintenance-free, and deep-cycle batteries, as well as the operation and diagnosis of starter and generator(alternator) systems. This class includes the use of diagnostic testers to perform load and no-load battery and charging system tests, parasitic tests for excessive key-off current, and starter draw tests for excessive or insufficient current load. Voltage drop tests are also included to assist the technician in using a DVOM to diagnose faulty electrical systems.
